About Ayurvedic Healing Therapy

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a system of natural healing which is over 5,000 years old and rooted in the ancient Vedic culture of India. Literally meaning “the science of life” (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge), Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga. Together yoga and Ayurveda work to help a person achieve health, happiness and liberation through the balanced and dynamic integration of body, mind and spirit with the changing cycles of nature. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain health by preventing disease, and eliminating the root cause of dis-ease.

Ayurveda is a way of living.
Ayurveda provides guidelines that an individual can follow, and work to achieve a physical, mental, and spiritual balance. In these guidelines, Ayurveda explains that humans are all a part of nature, and living in harmony with Nature is the secret to health and longevity. Additionally Ayurveda reveals that all life is made up of the same elements as are found in the Nature; earth is our body, water is the blood in our veins, fire is the heat in our body, air is our breath, and ether is the space in our atoms. According to Ayurveda there are three biological forces governing both our inner and outer environments. Known as doshas, they are referred to as: Vata (air/ether), Pitta (fire/water), and Kapha (water/earth).  Every human being is a unique combination of these doshas.

Vata is the wind force in Nature that is responsible for all of the movement in the body. If a person is Vata dominant, he or she tends to be thin, light, energetic, lively and changeable—just like the wind.  Pitta is compared to fire or the sun in Nature from which all transformative and digestive processes in the body take place. If Pitta is the dominant force, a person tends to be intelligent, driven, goal-oriented and fiery—and also has a strong appetite. Lastly, Kapha is the earth or moon in Nature and creates structure, stability, and lubrication in the body. If Kapha is the most dominant force, a person tends to be nurturing, supportive, caring, relaxed, easy-going, and affectionate. Each of these three doshas are represented in an individual in varying proportions.

When the doshas are balanced, the body and mind are in harmony with Nature and the individual experiences true health. However, if these doshas are not in sync and the person is not in harmony, he or she will often experience a variety of ailments. For instance, when Vata is in balance, a person is expansive, enthusiastic and creative, however if it is aggravated, he or she can suffer from anxiety, fear, constipation, dry skin and may have trouble focusing his or her attention. Similarly, when Pitta is functioning normally, a person will have healthy digestion, the firm ability to lead, speak and make decisions, but if Pitta is out of balance this person can be argumentative, irritable, short-tempered and may suffer from inflammatory conditions, indigestion or hyper acidity. If Kapha is balanced, a person will be calm, strong, sweet, grounded, stable and supportive. Although when it is imbalanced, a person may be lethargic, and suffer from congestion, weight gain and sluggish digestion.

Ayurveda works to identify a person’s unique body-type and offers guidelines to prevent the disease processes caused by imbalances in the three doshas. Adherence to Ayurvedic lifestyle and dietary guidelines along with herbal treatments, Ayurvedic oil massages, panchakarma, mantras, aromatherapy, meditation, and yoga reestablish and regenerate a healthy mind, body, spirit and equilibrium. Additionally, Ayurvedic treatments work to repair existing ailments that are already in place as a result of the imbalanced doshas.

Ayurveda is based on the laws that govern Nature, and in order to achieve health and happiness we must abide by Her laws. As the seasons change, wild animals must migrate, change their diets and hibernate in order to live harmoniously with their external environment.  As humans, we too must re-connect to this natural cycle, by changing our own diets and lifestyle in accordance to each changing season. The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda teaches us how to live, eat and balance our lives with Nature in modern times.

Women's Health

In our modern world where we are inundated by stress, high-demands, pollution, and adulterated views of reality, it is crucial that the modern woman regains her Shakti and balance, by aligning her mind-body-spirit with the rhythms of Nature. Ayurveda describes in great detail the three Doshas, which correspond to the three stages of life: Childhood to the Age of Kapha; Womanhood to the Age of Pitta; and Old Age to the Age of Vata. Each Age or phase in a woman’s life serves a distinct purpose in her physical, mental, and spiritual evolution. From delayed menses to menopause, and fibroids to pregnancy, Ayurveda can help women regain balance.

Ayurveda places great importance on preserving the natural health and balance of women. Women are the embodiments of the Creative Cosmic Energy, and it is through her womb, that life is born. Hence, the future generation of humankind depends on the health and happiness of their women. Women are naturally attuned to the rhythms of Nature as their monthly menstrual cycles wax and wane harmoniously with the lunar cycles.  Unfortunately, modern women have grown distant from their innate relationship with Nature and thus suffer from many imbalances and maladies that can easily be remedied through the Ancient Wisdom of Ayurveda.

Women are total representations of Mother Nature, and therefore it is important that we reconnect to our natural power of self-healing and creativity. Dr. Sheetal is passionate about helping women understand the importance of rebuilding their relationship with Nature in order to find true happiness, health, healing and harmony. Ayurvedic diet, lifestyle and herb counseling can help a woman re-connect to Nature's rhythm and re-discover her inherent connection with the Cosmic flow.

About Me

About Me - Sheetal Narsai - Ayurvedic Healing TherapyMy awakening to the deep mystical tradition of yoga led me to the study of Ayurveda. I was a collegiate athlete at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and my passion to excel led me to pursue degrees in the field of Kinesiology. I was fascinated with how the body functioned and the intricacies of energy metabolism.

I made sure I consumed the daily recommendations of protein, fiber, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. Although, I was consuming the daily requirements, my body was not properly digesting everything I consumed. I looked at the quantitative values of nutrients as opposed to the quality of foods I consumed. After practicing and teaching yoga, I began to look at the quality of food, but failed to look at my digestive capability.

Upon discovering Ayurveda, I learned that if food is not digested, it cannot be properly absorbed into the body to nourish and replenish, no matter how healthy the food. Ayurveda taught me that if my Agni (the digestive fire) is weak, I would not be fully benefiting from the “healthy” food I consumed.

If digestion is weak, one cannot properly metabolize food and use the energy one has consumed. Rather, the undigested food (AMA) has a toxic effect on the body. Every season also has certain diet and lifestyle guidelines that help the body and mind exist in harmony with Nature.

Once I learned that Indian culinary herbs and spices serve to enhance digestive processes, and therefore assist the body’s metabolism, I was awakened to a new way of living. Spices and herbs also help our body to naturally detoxify and remain balanced. Had Ayurveda not worked for so many, it would not be in existence, nor would it be thriving for over 5,000 years to date.

My mother and grandmother, like many Indian mothers, have unknowingly kept the Ayurvedic tradition of cooking and healing alive because the rich science of Ayurveda interwove with the culture and tradition of India thousands of years ago. I am re-discovering this ancient science of life and I am loving every moment!

Ayurvedic Healing Therapy Philanthrophy and Service

Welcome to Ayurvedic Healing Therapy

Philanthropy and Service with Ayurvedic Healing Therapy

Ayurvedic Healing Therapy is committed to serving humanity. Seva is the Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service.” Selfless service is an important principle in both Ayurveda and Yoga.  Because God is perceived as existing in all, serving another is like serving God, and an extended part of oneself.

Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Gandhi’s words deeply impacted me throughout my travels serving in rural villages in India and Africa and also serving our homeless brothers and sisters in my hometown of Los Angeles on Skid row.

The ultimate goal in life is to realize that all existence is intricately connected and one.

Service helps us understand this profound concept and tangibly experience that feeding a hungry being, is essentially feeding oneself. Compassion can save the world. We volunteer educational services and tools to uplift unprivileged communities and youth programs.

10% of all proceeds are donated to non-profits, such as organizations serving impoverished rural communities in India.

For those under financial difficulties and in need of Ayurvedic services please contact us via email regarding work trade. Please write, “Work trade inquiry” in the subject heading and briefly describe your difficulties.
