My awakening to the deep mystical tradition of yoga led me to the study of Ayurveda. I was a collegiate athlete at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and my passion to excel led me to pursue degrees in the field of Kinesiology. I was fascinated with how the body functioned and the intricacies of energy metabolism.
I made sure I consumed the daily recommendations of protein, fiber, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. Although, I was consuming the daily requirements, my body was not properly digesting everything I consumed. I looked at the quantitative values of nutrients as opposed to the quality of foods I consumed. After practicing and teaching yoga, I began to look at the quality of food, but failed to look at my digestive capability.
Upon discovering Ayurveda, I learned that if food is not digested, it cannot be properly absorbed into the body to nourish and replenish, no matter how healthy the food. Ayurveda taught me that if my Agni (the digestive fire) is weak, I would not be fully benefiting from the “healthy” food I consumed.
If digestion is weak, one cannot properly metabolize food and use the energy one has consumed. Rather, the undigested food (AMA) has a toxic effect on the body. Every season also has certain diet and lifestyle guidelines that help the body and mind exist in harmony with Nature.
Once I learned that Indian culinary herbs and spices serve to enhance digestive processes, and therefore assist the body’s metabolism, I was awakened to a new way of living. Spices and herbs also help our body to naturally detoxify and remain balanced. Had Ayurveda not worked for so many, it would not be in existence, nor would it be thriving for over 5,000 years to date.
My mother and grandmother, like many Indian mothers, have unknowingly kept the Ayurvedic tradition of cooking and healing alive because the rich science of Ayurveda interwove with the culture and tradition of India thousands of years ago. I am re-discovering this ancient science of life and I am loving every moment!
